About Us

History
On Jan. 22, 1942 the Flint News Advertiser printed a coupon asking Mothers of servicemen to return the coupon.. Feb. 1,1942, 300 mothers met in the Durant Hotel, in Flint Michigan. Captain George H. Maines, who had conceived the idea for this group, acted as chair for the first meeting. It was decided that after receiving 1,000 responses from the ad a permanent organization would be formed. This happened 5 days later on Feb. 6, 1942 and the organization was reported in the Congressional Record. Chapters then formed in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York,Pennsylvania,Oregon, California, Iowa and Washington. In June of 1960 Blue Star Mothers of America was officially chartered by Congress.
Mothers volunteered through the tough times of WWII. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for Soldiers and were a working part of homeland security during times of war. The organization waned in size over the years, but has been held together by mothers showing pride in their children and country. In recent times we have begun to grow in strength. Being attacked on our own soil once again started mothers hanging Blue Star flags in their windows proclaiming pride in the fact that their children are protecting our freedom during times of war.
We have nearly 6,000 members in over 200 chapters throughout the nation.

Cape Fear Blue Star Mothers
History of Cape Fear Blue Star Mothers of America
Cape Fear Blue Star Mothers of America was cofounded by two local military moms, Kim Dionisio and Davida Schnebelen. They were looking to create a band of mothers that could support each other while also supporting our military past and present. The name Cape Fear Blue Star Mothers of America was chosen so the chapter could represent Brunswick, New Hanover & Pender counties. The first meeting was held in June 2021 and the chapter received their charter on July 26, 2021. The chapter was chartered with the most members in recent history! The membership has grown to nearly 50 members and all are welcome. In the first six months a lot was accomplished including holding a free PTSD seminar, hosting a benefit dance, sending care packages to troops overseas, attending Veterans Day ceremonies, holding a very successful fundraiser for Wreaths Across America and volunteering at the wreath laying and holding a flag retirement ceremony just to name a few events. We are also proud to be building relationships with other local organizations and we look forward to partnering with and supporting them in the future.
